Description : Mirabella Eclano is an Italian town and comune of the province of Avellino, in the Campania region. As of 2011 its population was of 7,904. The Roman site of Aeclanum once stood nearby. It is now an archaeological park and lies in the frazione of Passo di Mirabella. With the advent of the Lombards , Eclano was included in the Duchy of Benevento only to be definitively destroyed by the Byzantine army of Constant II in 663 . It was reduced to a miserable village called Quintodecimo (15 miles from Benevento ). In the 10th - 11th centuries the inhabited center was transferred, acquiring the name of Aquaputrida first and of Mirabella from the 14th century . The village, already severely damaged by the Benevento earthquake of 1702 , was then razed to the ground by1732 Irpinia earthquake and subsequently rebuilt in its present location.
