With the advent of the Lombards , Eclano was included in the Duchy of Benevento only to be definitively destroyed by the Byzantine army of Constant II in 663 . It was reduced to a miserable village called Quintodecimo (15 miles from Benevento ). In the 10th - 11th centuries the inhabited center was transferred, acquiring the name of Aquaputrida first and of Mirabella from the 14th century . The village, already severely damaged by the Benevento earthquake of 1702 , was then razed to the ground by1732 Irpinia earthquake and subsequently rebuilt in its present location.
